Skill Specialization

Certain skills are by default very general, that means that using the skill would only provide or give you general knowledge and utility from the skill. (These skills are italicised and will be denoted as "general skill". For instance Engineering : As a general skill it would imply that you have a very broad but shallow knowledge of the specific branches of Engineering (like Electrical or Mechanical Engineering) but would be very well placed to provide general information or deduce what specific knowledge or skills are necessary to accomplish something. Your use of the skill would be more used to set up and oversee Engineering Projects than Physically accomplish them.

Specializations on the other hand would give VERY specific knowledge of an aspect of the General skill, your knowledge of other aspects would be quite limited. An Electronics Engineer would be very good creating and repairing electronics, and troubleshooting electronic problems, but would be stumped trying to fix a car-engine (mechanical engineering). He'd still be much better off than someone with no knowledge at all, of course.

Specialization rules

You can specialise in a Minor Milestone OR during character creation, for any General skill. You can only add one specialization per skill at creation and raise only one (or additional ones) at significant milestones.

Specialization allows you to add one or more "skills" behind the general skill, which is 1 point higher. Every two points you put into this makes your main skill rise by 1 point as well. Specializations are not susceptible to the skill column, but the general skill IS. Which means that if a specialization might raise the general skill you will have to wait until you've raised the required lower skills on the skill column. You can get multiple specializations for one skill and the main skill could rise faster than an individual specialization, this just means that you understand more of theory and interplay of the different specializations.

General skill use

Iconic use

Iconic use means that the general skill is generally used or trained for a very specific use. Iconic use simulates that, you can choose (with GM approval) to have a specific Specialization count as Iconic use, which means you don't get the penalty for General skill use. An example would be Drive, in general the iconic use for drive would be a normal car, and you won't suffer the penalty. In rare situations this can differ from most people (if you grew up on a farm it could be Drive(Farming implements), or learned driving tanks in the army for instance...) You can still specialize in an iconic skill which would give you a +2 to the skill (which does not count to raising the general skill in this instance) when you specialize.
