Arcane Lore is the skill of controlling Arcane energies by studying and preparing spells through the use of Secrets. Using these volatile energies is inherently dangerous and a drain on your mental and physical health. It can only be taken if a High Concept is chosen, there is no dabbling in Arcane Lore, you wouldn't survive if you didn't give it your all.

Overcome: Overcome is used to create a direct effect (either directly on a target, which gets resisted by a logical opposing power, for a mental effect Will, a physical effect by Physique, though certain ones could be dodged by Athletics. Overcoming obstacles means overcoming that target number (which is the drain). Overcome is also used to resist the Drain.

Create advantage: Spells can be used to create an advantage, following the same rules as above and described in Arcane.

Attack: Spells can be used to attack, and it works the same as described in overcome.

D

Defend: Arcane Lore can be used to Defend against Unnatural, Natural, Unholy and Holy creatures alike. This makes a mage especially powerful against those types of enemies. It only works against physical attacks and other attacks from the same source. For example it can be used to defend against a Dragon's (Unholy) claws and teeth, and it's Breath attack Unholy, but not if it smashes a tree trunk into you, same thing goes for demons grabbing a weapon and shooting or impaling you on it. Attacks get resisted as if they were Drain as long as the Wizard is actively defending (you cannot do anything else that round).

Stunts

  • Illusionist. You can create effects without the required secret, something that looks similar and (in the observer's mind) feels or acts similar. Each use costs one Fate. The effect is resisted by Willpower and if you fail, the target sees through the illusion for no effect at all, on a tie the target believes it was hit but doesn't understand why it had no effect. If you succeed, the spell takes effect for that scene only. If you succeed with style for all intents and purposes the target believes the effect to be real and its body will follow suit.
  • Blood Mage. You can use others or your own(fresh) blood to resist drain, per Physical Stress taken, your drain is lowered by TWO stress. Blood Magic is highly frowned upon, and it's grounds for Summary Execution for the Church.
  • Spellbook. Given a day you can swap the secrets in your stunt-slots for other secrets you've collected. It takes a day to rest, meditate and clear your mind, then re-learn any amount of secrets (as many as you have open Stunt slots).
