The biblical apocalypse happened somewhere in 2454 on Earth. Seas boiled, skies red, Demons roamed the earth, horsemen of the apocalypse, angels came down. Humans split over both camps. Long story short, the Church, having secretly prepared (Shielded knights, vibro-blades, rail-guns,...), won. After 15 years of war the last Demon has been defeated, but not before the majority of the world-population died. (500 million left). Nukes (entire swathes of land glassed), famine (seas are dead), pestilence (horsemen, breakdown of society),.... Society is now mostly feudal, monsters still roam the earth, most cities in ruins,... Though the Church has enclaves all over the place, but they're still only a small fraction of the total population. Only the best and brightest go (read get taken) there, and only if they're "pure" whatever that means. The rest tries to eke out a meagre existence in feudal tech, small townships or city-states. The Church is still high-tech, but they don't want to share, taking what they want and leaving the scraps for others to fight over.
